Would love to see what you acquired from your last thrifting day last fall and how you put the outfits together! Thanks!

My long johns, down parka, wool socks, scarf, hat & mittens will never look this chic. The wardrobe challenges in much of the country are different than those of sunny California. Looking forward to Spring when something like this might be possible!

Yes, so true. I was cross country skiing the other day and had on: undergarments, long johns, sweat pants, snow pants, turtleneck, sweater, vest, coat, gloves and hat. Then of course the shoes came off and on went the ski shoes, skis and poles. A whole closet full of stuff on my back at one time... but itwas less than 10 degrees in the sun and I was skiiing in the woods! But I am trying, none the less, to downsize by season.

  4. Bea, I love your blog and I am trying hard to downsize my wardrobe too. I want to invest in a few good quality pieces and wonder where you suggest getting such pieces as I know that high cost is not always the same as high quality. I love that stripe classic shirt you wear. Where is it from? I have had similar shirts that have not lasted more than a few washes. I am tired of having to purchase the same clothes repeatedly. Your advise is greatly appreciated.

  5. Bea, I had a question that isn't related to fashion. I was wondering if you always use dry beans and not canned. I was also wondering how many basic recipes you have that you use on a regular basis.

I thrift shop all the time in my town. You have to be very patient and know what you have in your closet. I get alot of my coats (barely used) at Thrift stores. I usually shop at the upper crust thrift stores but not always. I just think it's fun.
Last month I got a pair of Kenneth Cole shoes (leather and Cheetah) for $15. Never worn still had the tissue in the toes. :) I was happy all day long. . . .

  7. Some thrift shops are indeed very nice but I don't like the ones that have clothes with ripped seams or stains (even if you don't discover them at first sight). Since I'm tiny and already have troubles finding regular clothes that fit (even the xxs petite sizes) my chances to find something in a thrift store are very little. However I love furniture thrift shops (especially the contemporary ones that don't sell antiques, e.g. Southern Comforts in Atlanta) That's where we bought most of our furniture, dishes etc. We moved from overseas and had to buy everything from scratch. Like in fashion those pieces bring a lot more character to the design. Bea, I'm looking forward to your Friday fashion tips especially since you're a professional and very creative. Thank's for being such a great inspiration.

    1. Anne that must be very frustrating! Remember you can always upcycle thift shop clothes- take them in so they fit, or cut the stained/damaged top off a dress and sew a band on to make a unique skirt, the unworn sections and leftover fabric can be used for rags around the house etc.

    2. great idea, thank you! however I'm not up for buying a sewing machine and the time issue is a problem too. ;) but I can definately consider if theres just small changes to be made I can sew by hand.

    Looks fab!

I read Elizabeth Cline's book "The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion" recently. Wow! I highly recommend anyone interested in reducing waste read this book. Not only will it give you things to ponder but it will also answer the questions of how can I help this situation and point you in the right direction for sustainable clothing of good quality.

  10. Looks great!

Your blog is so inspiring! I've started the process of paring down my wardrobe and have found that while I have a lot of clothes, I don't have a lot of outfits. I hate to shop except when I travel, which is 2-3 times a year. This year, my goal is versatility as well as fashion. I'm definitely looking forward to Fashion Fridays for tips and ideas!

  14. You look great, but then EVERYTHING looks great on you. You have a fantastic sense of style in both wardrobe and home decor. You are definitely an ARTIST! I enjoy your Web site, and hold you in high esteem. I will never reach your level of "perfection", but I do reuse whenever I can. I've been using various cobblers all my life, and still wear shoes from 30 years ago (that look like new). I've only owned one car in my life, which I still drive on rare occasions (1971 MGB). Most of the time I walk or take public transportation. My biggest fault is hanging onto sentimental things. I just can't seem to help myself in this regard, but eventually I will recycle the big box of greeting cards and childrens' artwork. I'm sure someone will appreciate them for their kids' school projects. BTW, I have MANY ponytail bands (in various colors), and I'm happy to mail JUST ONE of them to you when yours bites the dust. Of course, this will require using an envelope and a stamp which you may find objectionable. If you're ever in SF during weekdays, just stop on by to 50 Fremont St. and ask for "Kimmy at Parsons". I'll keep an extra ponytail band in my pocket for you. Hugs from your big fan, Kimmy

  17. This website is my secret, guilty pleasure, but luckily also a great source of inspiration and motivation. So glad to find out that your book will also be released in France ( a little more accesible for me from Belgium...). Just wanted you to know that you are changing lives, even oversees, one blogitem a time.

    In gratitude,
    Emma.
